Down 16 at halftime, UP finishes strong to deny Adamson in OT

The University of the Philippines scored another come from behind victory, this time against the Adamson University, 87-78, on Wednesday at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.

 

The Fighting Maroons overcame a 16-point deficit at the half, 31-47,  before coming alive in the second half, outscoring the Falcons 56-31.

 

With 0.1 seconds left in regulation, Spencer fouled Joem Sabandal who made three clutch free throws to send the game into overtime at 74 all.

 

UP pulled away quickly in extra time by scoring 8 straight points starting with a James Spencer triple off a Terrence Fortea pass.

 

Fortea shot another three then assisted Malick Diouf for the slam as the scoreboard read 82-74 with 2:28 remaining.

 

The Maroons banked on a 13-4 run in OT to go 2-0 in the tournament.

 

Zavier Lucero came up big for UP, copping the player of the game honors with his 15 points, seven rebounds, and four assists. Diouf was a steady presence especially in the endgame, tallying a double-double of 13 points, 12 rebounds, along with four assists, three steals, and four blocks.

 

Jerom Lastimosa led the Falcons, firing 25 points to go with six assists, and six rebounds. Lenda Douanga contributed 11 points, eight rebounds, and three blocks.

 

University of the Philippines (2-0) is now going for its third straight win in the UAAP Season 85 Men’s Basketball Tournament against Far Eastern University (0-2). The 2PM game will headline the clash between Adamson University (0-2) and University of the East (1-1). Both games will be held on Saturday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
