GAME STATS: How did the UPMBT make Katipunan maroon?

GS UPMBT R2 ADMU

Last Sunday, Katipunan changed from blue to maroon as the UP Men’s Basketball Team got the revenge win and remained on top of the standings. So how did the Fighting Maroons won the battle?

UP executed better on offense, making 37.9% of their field goal attempts while limiting Ateneo to just 32.8% (far from their 43.7% in the round 1 match up). UP also took hold of shaded area, amassing 36 points in the paint (vs Ateneo’s 18).

Looking at the other stats, this is a pretty even match up. There is a small difference In rebounds (42 vs 46), assists (14 vs 13), steals (7 vs 8) and even blocks (5 vs 4). But Ateneo shot poorly on the free throw line (50.0% vs 83.3%) – missing 7 free throws in a game they only lost by 5 points.

UP was also able to minimize their errors. They only tallied 13 turnovers, their season low in UAAP Season 86 (vs Ateneo’s 15). The team was also able to capitalize on these errors which they converted to more fast break points (12 vs 5).

Some things UP needs to look at are three point shooting and offensive rebounding. The team only made 5 out of 23 attempts from beyond the arc (21.7%) while they were limited to just grabbing 7 offensive rebounds, both were the team’s season low.

UP really executed their game plan well and the win already assures the team of at least a playoff for a Final Four slot and a win on Sunday might secure it already.
