The UP Fighting Maroons extend their winning streak to 7 after defeating the NU Bulldogs, 84-76, on Tuesday at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

After finding themselves behind by double digits as much as 15 in the first half, the Bulldogs clawed back and tied the game at 58-all with a Reyland Torres triple towards the end of the third quarter.

With 6:30 minutes left in the fourth frame, John Lloyd Clemente nailed a three-pointer to get NU within 2, 68-66.

The Fighting Maroons, led by Carl Tamayo, along with Zavier Lucero, Ricci Rivero, and Joel Cagulangan, then went on a 14-2 run, stretching their advantage to 14, 82-68, at the 1:25 mark of the pay-off period to prevent NU from mounting a comeback.

UP’s prized rookie Tamayo scored 16 points in the first half to total 21 points, 10 rebounds, and 3 steals, earning the player of the game dub. Lucero tallied 16 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 blocks, while Rivero contributed 16 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 assists. Joel Cagulangan finished with 8 assists, 7 points, and 3 rebounds.

Clemente kept NU in step with UP, finishing with 18 points on a 50% shooting average. Reyland Torres waxed hot, sinking 4 triples in the game and accounted for 15 points on 15 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 steals.

“We started strong nung first quarter, siguro sa lahat ng games namin dito kami nakapag-start ng madiin talaga,” said Fighting Maroons head coach Goldwin Monteverde. “But sa third quarter, dumami ‘yung turnovers namin so we need to see what errors to improve pa rin. Definitely, coming from this win meron pa kaming ma-lelearn eh. Kailangan lang namin makita to move on.”

“Siguro, araw ko lang, I’m just trying to be aggressive lang sa court, it could be me, it could be Zav (Lucero), it could be Ricci (Rivero), it could be Noah (Webb). Siguro dumating lang sa akin yung laro, just ginawa ko lang yung best ko ngayon game and then yun, yun din yung challenge sa amin dahil loaded kami, pano namin ma-work as team yung talents namin to win games,” said Tamayo on his double-double performance.

After a one-week break, UP (7-1) will gun for the eighth consecutive win as they square off with FEU (3-5) in the first game on Tuesday, April 19. NU (4-4) seeks to get back to the win column versus Adamson (2-6) at 7 pm the same day.
