UP kicked off their UAAP Season 86 campaign on a winning note, after both the UP Women’s and Men’s Basketball Teams won their respective matches against Adamson. So how exactly did UP do it?
Both teams executed well on both sides of the court – on offense and on defense.
UPWBT had the highest field goal percentage among all teams in their opening match at 47.6% while getting 22 assists. The team did not disappoint on defense as well, limiting AdU to only 32.8% on field goals and forced 26 turnovers. The team also had more steals (15-4) and dominated on blocks (5-0), making it hard for AdU to execute.
On the other hand, the UPMBT showed the same thing yesterday. Though they can still improve their field goal percentage (38.2%), they were able to move the ball and dish out more assists (18-11).
On defense, UP dominated blocking (8-3) and forced 19 turnovers. They were also able to convert the defense into offense from the 6 points off turnovers and 11 fastbreak points. They also did not allow AdU to score on second chances, limiting AdU to 8 offensive rebounds and no second chance points.
On areas they need to improve on, UPWBT needs to look at their 3pt shooting (29.6%) and offensive rebounding while the UPMBT needs to make more of their free throws (60%) and less turnovers (19).
