The UP Fighting Maroons bounced back from the loss against the Adamson Soaring Falcons by surviving a late-game rally by the DLSU Green Archers, 72-69, on Saturday at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

With the win, UP has booked a ticket to the final four and further solidified their spot at solo second.

Looking at an 11-point early in the fourth quarter, 60-49, the Archers came within 5, 64-59 with 5:08 left to play.

Maroons Carl Tamayo, Malick Diouf, and Ricci Rivero established a 7-0 run and a double-digit advantage, 71-59, with a little under 2 minutes left in the game.

Schonny Winston and Michael Phillips combined for 10 straight points to breathe life into DLSU, reducing the deficit to just two with 10.5 seconds remaining, 69-71.

Rivero was fouled and split his free throws. On the other end, Mark Nonoy missed the game-tying triple.

Both Tamayo and Malick Diouf had double-double performances. The former established a career-high of 23 points along with 11 rebounds while the latter had 15 points and 18 rebounds. The duo went for a 15/23 field goal percentage.

Rivero chipped in 11 while JD Cagulangan facilitated the offense for UP, totaling 9 assists in addition to his 4 points. Zavier Lucero contributed 9 points and 8 rebounds.

For DLSU, Justine Baltazar top scored with 16 points, 12 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 blocks, and 2 steals. Winston and Lojera had 16 and 13 respectively.

The Maroons once again struggled at the line, going 7-of-16, but their double-digit cushion in the dying minutes helped avert the gritty comeback of the Archers.

“Actually yung game namin compared sa last game very different we had very good ball movement from the start we were shooting the ball, we were hitting the open man yung mga things would really working on nakita namin kanina, siguro for me we just need to improve yung mga free throws namin,” said UP head coach Goldwin Monteverde.

UP (9-2) will try to establish another win streak and gain momentum heading to the final four when they face UE (0-11) on Tuesday, at 12:30 PM. Now at the third spot, DLSU (7-4) seeks to maintain their position as they battle it out with FEU (5-6) at 10 AM.
