Surging Adamson Halts UP’s Winning Streak

The Adamson University Soaring Falcons exact revenge from the heartbreaking first round loss against the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons, 66-58, in the UAAP Men’s Basketball Tournament on Thursday at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City. 

 

The Soaring Falcons continue their rise after limiting the winning streak of the Fighting Maroons to eight. Adamson has won three straight matches and is now at 4-6, having identical records with NU and FEU. Most of all, they are still in tight contention for the fourth spot. 

 

With less than 30 seconds left in the game, the scoreboard reads 59-57 in favor of Adamson, Jerom Lastimosa buries a dagger at the top of the key to prevent the Maroons from launching a comeback at 62-57. 

 

Ricci Rivero converted a free throw following the technical foul called on Ricky Peromingan from Adamson. UP was forced to give up fouls on Keith Zaldivar and Lastimosa who went 4/4 on the line to ice the game, 66-58. 

 

UP’s slow start and missing 13 attempts at the stripe came back to haunt them. The Fighting Maroons trailed by as much as 17 in the first quarter, 30-13, and managed to keep the deficit to a single digit at the half until the dying minutes. However, they couldn’t break through a 2 point margin as the Falcons scored a wire-to-wire victory.

 

Lastimosa showcased an all-around game and finished with 13 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 blocks, and 1 steal, including 8 points in the fourth quarter. Joem Sabandal added 11 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists while Didat Hanapi contributed 12 points. 

 

In a losing effort, Rivero led UP with 14 points and 5 rebounds. Carl Tamayo had 12 points and 8 rebounds to his name. 

 

“Lagi ko sinasabi na whether it’s a win or a loss, ang importante kung ano yung ano ba i-take home dito, ano ba dapat namin gawin moving towards pa sa mga let’s say bigger games,” UP heach coach Goldwin Monteverde said. “We’ll be looking forward to prepare for La Salle na, so yun naman ang importante dun makita kung ano nangyari then not to do ulit what a piece to move forward na.”

 

Adamson (4-6) squares off with UST (3-7) in the opening game on Saturday, April 23. UP (8-2) aims to bounce back against DLSU (7-3) at 4:30 PM.
