UP Announces Benson Bocboc, Carlo Cabatingan as New UP Fighting Maroons Women’s, Men’s Volleyball Head Coaches
The University of the Philippines Women’s Volleyball Team (WVT) is poised for a transformative season, with renewed hope and a fresh strategy aimed at reclaiming its spot among the elite in the UAAP. Under the leadership of new head coach Benson Bocboc, the Fighting Maroons are embracing a blend of experience and youthful talent, setting the stage for a promising journey ahead.
Volleyball program director Oliver Almadro has strategically positioned Bocboc, a seasoned coach with extensive experience from De La Salle University, to guide the team. Bocboc’s wealth of knowledge will be instrumental as he seeks to harness the potential of a revitalized roster that includes veterans like Nina Ytang, Nica Celis, and Irah Jaboneta, alongside emerging stars such as Kianne Olango, Yesha Noceja, and Jothea Mae Ramos.
After a challenging previous season that saw the team struggling with just one victory, the Fighting Maroons are infused with a renewed sense of purpose and energy. This optimism is palpable, especially as UP is currently hosting UAAP Season 87, turning what could have been a disadvantage into a unique opportunity for growth and connection with their passionate fanbase.
“Having two champion coaches collaborating is a game-changer for us,” said UP Office for Athletics and Sports Development Director Bo Perasol. “With coach Bocboc on board and coach Almadro overseeing the program, we have a solid foundation to build on. The continued support from our backers, especially Frank Lao from Strong Group Athletics, fuels our ambition.”
Bocboc’s tenure at De La Salle gave him invaluable insights, making him an ideal candidate to lead the Fighting Maroons back to prominence. His experience as interim coach for the F2 Logistics Cargo Movers showcases his ability to motivate and develop teams, a crucial skill as he transitions to his new role.
The Fighting Maroons are not just aiming for improvement; they are aspiring to make a significant impact. With the last championship win dating back to the early 1980s, the drive to return to the Final Four is not merely about accolades but about fostering a culture of resilience and competitiveness.
As the team gears up for the upcoming season, the synergy between the seasoned players and fresh talent hints at a more dynamic and versatile approach on the court. The excitement surrounding the program is evident, and fans are eagerly anticipating the team’s growth.
While challenges lie ahead, the Fighting Maroons are more than ready to face them. With the right leadership, a supportive community, and a group of athletes eager to rise to the occasion, there is a palpable sense of hope. This season, the UP Women’s Volleyball Team is not just chasing victories; they are on a mission to rebuild a legacy and inspire a new generation of players and supporters.
Meanwhile, the UP Men’s Volleyball Team will be coached by former UP Fighting Maroons setter Carlo Cabatingan.
