UP drubs UST to go 6-1

University of the Philippines finishes the first round of eliminations at 6-1 after dealing University of Santo Tomas a 25-point rout, 76-51, on Saturday at the Ynares Center in Antipolo City.

UP used a strong start to pull get separation early from UST with their lead ballooning to 28, 57-29, courtesy of five straight points from Terrence Fortea with 3:43 left in the third quarter.

Capped by back-to-back triples by Nic Cabanero, the Growling Tigers cut down the deficit to just 11 on a 20-3 run, 60-49, with 5:49 remaining. However the Fighting Maroons then launched a 16-2 run to put the game away in their favor.

Fortea steered UP with 14 points, three assists, and three steals. Player of the Game Zavier Lucero had an all around game of 12 points, five rebounds, four assists, and five steals.

Adama Faye led UST with 15 points and 13 rebounds while Cabanero contributed 14.

UP gets their first double-digit victory, getting their third straight win, while UST falls to 1-6, absorbing their sixth consecutive loss.
