The UP Fighting Maroons are back in the finals of the UAAP Men’s Basketball Tournament after eliminating the DLSU Green Archers, 78-74, in a come-from-behind win on Friday, at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

Down by 14 with 4:31 to go in the game, 56-70, the Maroons, led by Carl Tamayo and Harold Alarcon, mounted a huge 22-4 rally to snatch the win and bring UP back to the finals.

A Mike Phillips layup for the Archers and 4 straight points by Tamayo tied the game at 73 with 1:30 left.

Phillips split his charities with 32.2 seconds left, giving DLSU a 1-point lead, 73-74.

Tamayo bulldozed his way on the inside and fetched a foul plus the shot, completing a three-point play, 76-74.

Evan Nelle put up a floater but missed. He was forced to foul Tamayo who grabbed the rebound and sank both freebies to secure the win for UP.

“Actually halos buong game we were struggling,” said UP head coach Goldwin Monteverde. “It led until the last four minutes but we never gave up, ‘yung overcoming adversity. Sa totoo lang, ‘di ko maano what I’m feeling right now eh… Going into this game, everyone just decided that we were gonna fight until the end.”

“Siguro dahil dun sa hinubog sa amin ni coach Gold simula bata kami lalabas at lalabas lalo na tuwing gantong laro, tsaka para sa UP community, sa pamilya ko.” Halos lahat ng teammates ko walang bumibigay, yun nagbigay lakas sa akin na gawin ko lahat ng kaya ko para makuha ko itong panalo na to.”

Tamayo scored 12 of his 19 points in the payoff period, with 10 rebounds, four steals, and three assists.

Harold Alarcon kept UP above water throughout the game with 14 points, 6 rebounds, 2 steals, and 1 block.

Schonny Winston fired 26 points in the season-ending loss for DLSU.

Graduating senior Justine Baltazar only had 9 points, making only 4-of-13 shots, with 8 rebounds, 4 assists, three steals, and 1 block.

Phillips had a double-double of 10 points and 17 rebounds.

Nelle was limited to 6 points coming off a 26-point breakout game in the first Final Four meeting.

UP will be going up against three-time defending champions Ateneo in a repeat match-up of the UAAP Season 81 Men’s Basketball finals. The best-of-three series starts on May 8, Sunday, at 4 PM.
