Fortea Returns with New Role, Sparks UP Win Over Ateneo
The University of the Philippines (UP) kicked off UAAP Season 87 with a 77-61 victory over their Katipunan rivals, the Ateneo Blue Eagles. The UP community had an extra reason to cheer as familiar face Terrence Fortea made a triumphant return to the court.
Fortea, who missed most of Season 86 due to injury and saw limited action during the preseason, showcased his impact in just over 13 minutes of play, scoring 8 points. His shooting efficiency was on point, converting 2 out of 3 three-point attempts (66.7%) and 1 out of 2 two-point attempts (50%), reminding everyone of his sophomore form. Notably, this mirrored his comeback game last season against the same opponent, where he posted a similar stat line. However, the expectations are higher this year as he is considered one of the team’s seniors.
When asked about his leadership role, Fortea emphasized the importance of guiding the younger players and staying ready to contribute off the bench. “Siguro i-guide yung mga bago kasi yun nga 4th year ko na. Siguro being ready lang rin kasi off the bench din ako and siguro i-remind yung mga nasa loob kung may mga bagay ba silang nakakaligtaan or may mga bagay ba silang hindi nakikita sa gitna so ayun taga remind din,” he explained.
For Fortea, this season isn’t just about points or minutes on the court. It’s about embracing his role and helping the Fighting Maroons in any way he can.
Regarding the team’s goals and aspirations, Fortea maintained a focused approach, stating, “Siguro [gaya ng] laging sinasabi sa amin [nila coach] is one game at a time. Siguro sa December pa naman yung ano e, finals and final four. Ayun every game is importante sa amin. Lahat ng school at teams ay paghahandaan namin [the] same way.”
Terrence Fortea’s return to the UP Fighting Maroons may seem like just another addition to their already deep roster. However, his leadership and experience will be invaluable as they strive for a championship this season after two consecutive second-place finishes.
