University of the Philippines recorded its fifth consecutive loss in the UAAP Season 87 Women’s Basketball Tournament, falling to the DLSU Green Archers, 62-69, Sunday, at the SMART Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.

This loss comes after both teams officially bowed out of Final Four contention when the Ateneo Blue Eagles clinched the fourth spot with their against the FEU Tamaraws on November 9.

Both teams traded leads to start the first quarter, but DLSU’s defense made it impossible for UP to take control of the game. After a close first frame, the Green Archers went on a 16-4 run care of Luisa San Juan and Lee Sario’s back to back threes, outscoring UP, 19-9, in the second quarter, heading into the third quarter with a 15-point lead, 53-38.

An inside basket from Kyla Sunga and a three-pointer from Tricia Mendoza extended La Salle’s lead to 62-48 in the final frame. Despite Kaye Pesquera and Achrissa Maw’s consecutive baskets in the last two minutes, the Green Archers had already established a big enough lead to seal the deal.

Maw scored 40% of UP’s 62 with 25 points, seven rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Pesquera chipped in 14 points, four rebounds, three assists, and one steal.

Although Louna Ozar played for 28 minutes, she was checked by La Salle’s defense and was limited to just seven points, only making three of her 13 field goal attempts and a single free throw, together with her seven rebounds, five assists, and three steals.

Camille Nolasco contributed five points, while Alexandra Mendoza and Christie Bariquit had four points each.

Four Green Archers finished in double digits, with San Juan’s 18 points, four assists, and one block leading them. Sario added 15 points, six rebounds, and two assists, Sunga had 14 points, seven rebounds, one assist, and one steal, and Mendoza tallied 11 points, nine rebounds, four assists, four blocks, and three steals.

Moving forward, UP aims to halt its losing skid and grab its first win in the second round against the FEU Tamaraws on Saturday, November 16, 10:00 AM at the FilOil EcoOil Centre in San Juan. Currently, UP is tied with FEU at sixth place, with three wins and nine losses.

Standing at fifth place with four wins and eight losses, La Salle will look to put a dent on National University’s unblemished record and force a final four format when they clash on November 13, 12:00 NN at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion.
