For the past two UAAP seasons, Benjamin Palacio III has been a vital force for the UP Men’s Football Team (UPMFT). Whether it be his corner kicks, his handy goal assists, or his relentless fight for every possession, the 21-year-old has consistently been a key contributor to the team, helping the Fighting Maroons secure a bronze finish in Season 87.
This season, however, Palacio has been forced to help the squad from the sidelines after sustaining a left knee injury. Although frustrated that he cannot play, he chooses to remain motivated and optimistic, believing that God has plans for him and that everything happens for a reason.
Redemption tour
After falling short of defending the championship last season, the team came into UAAP Season 88 eager to redeem themselves. So far, UP’s determination has paid off, ending the first round of eliminations, at the top of the rankings with 13 points, a +6 goal difference, and a 5-1-0 record.
“Malaki [ang] tiwala ko sa kanilang lahat na kaya nilang ibalik yung title ulit sa UP,” he shared. The forward turned midfielder also highlighted the importance of having younger players stepping up, especially with many seniors set to graduate after this season.
“Nakakatuwa lang din dahil kapag nakikita ko yung mga teammates ko na nagtutulungan at nagsasaluhan on and off the pitch.”
Still, Palacio believes there’s room for improvement. He particularly pointed out the need for better finishing from their forwards. Possessions are useless “kung sa harap ng goal, hindi nila [forwards] ma-score,” he explained. “Kaya para sakin, finishing talaga hangga’t maaari first half palang tapusin na agad nila.”
Playing at home
With all games now set to be played at the UP Diliman Football Pitch, the third-year student hopes the community will continue showing their support. To start the second round, UP is scheduled to face the UE Red Warriors on Thursday at 4PM.
“Thank you for the support sana patuloy pa rin kayong sumuporta sa UPMFT, hindi lang sa football pati na rin sa ibang sports. Isa kayo sa dahilan kung bakit kami naglalaro ng may buong puso at tapang. Sana manalo man o matalo, ‘wag kayong magsawang sumuporta sa amin. Thank you so much UP community! UP Fight!”
Even from the sidelines, Benjie continues to celebrate every UP goal as if he were still on the pitch. And as the UPMFT fights for another title, he knows that his journey, although paused, is far from over.
