UP Snaps Ateneo’s 39-Game Win Streak

The UP Fighting Maroons prevailed over the Ateneo Blue Eagles, 84-83, snapping the defending champions’ 39-game winning streak and preventing an elimination round sweep on Sunday at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

 

The last time UP won against Ateneo was on October 8, 2016, 56-52.

 

UP led by as much as 18 points in the second quarter, 32-14, after Chris Koon fouled Ricci Rivero who sank 2-of-2 free throws.

 

With 4:15 left in the game, Ateneo was already up by 4, 77-81, succeeding an SJ Belangel jumper.

 

Malick Diouf sank both free throws and James Spencer buried a cold-blooded triple, pushing the Maroons ahead by a point, 82-81, with 43.6 ticks left.

 

A Dave Ildefonso putback off a Gian Mamuyac miss shifted the lead to the side of the blue-and-white, 82-83.

 

On the other end, Rivero fetched a foul and converted clutch freebies to give UP a 1-point advantage, 84-83.

 

Diouf was sent to the line and missed both freebies but got the rebound to seal the win.

 

Diouf helmed UP, logging in 18 points on 6/7 shots, 16 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 steal, and 1 block. Carl Tamayo went for 16 points and Spencer tallied 12 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists.

 

Ange Kouame carried Ateneo with 21 points, 17 rebounds, four assists, three steals, and three blocks. Dave Ildefonso contributed 18 markers and seven rebounds, while Belangel chipped in 11 points.

 

“Winning against Ateneo siyempre is a big achievement for us, and knowing that Ateneo is 13-0 and they had a long streak” said UP head coach Goldwin Monteverde. “One thing good for me kanina, yung team namin stayed as team no matter how close the game was.”

 

A traditional Final Four format will be followed where the first and second-ranked squads have a twice-to-beat advantage.

 

Action commences on Wednesday at 2PM with second-seeded UP (12-2) facing DLSU (9-5). The match between league leaders AdMU (13-1) and FEU (7-7) is slated at 6 PM.
