The UP Fighting Maroons lost their twice-to-beat advantage after falling short of mounting a comeback over the hot-shooting DLSU Green Archers, 80-83, on Wednesday at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

A Michael Phillips bucket stretched the DLSU lead to 22, 44-66, with 2:25 to go in the third quarter. UP went on an 11-0 spurt to end the third to trail by just 11, 55-66.

The Fighting Maroons slowly chipped away the deficit to as little as 3, 78-81, after a Gerry Abadiano triple with 13.4 seconds left.

Evan Nelle went 2-of-4 of his free throws down the stretch to give the Archers a 5-point cushion and deny the Maroons an outright finals berth.

Nelle paced the Archers with his 26 points including 5 of the 9 DLSU triples, 6 rebounds, and 7 assists.

Justine Baltazar was steady throughout the game and finished with a double-double of 15 points and 18 rebounds.

Malick Diouf once again had a monster game for UP, tallying 18 points and 20 rebounds, but in a losing effort.

Ricci Rivero also scored 18 with 8 rebounds and 5 blocks. Zavier Lucero sank 11 of his 17 markers at the stripe.

“Sa ganitong klaseng game we have to want it more than your opponent, and di lang namin siguro na-match yung intensity,” UP head coach Goldwin Monteverde said. “Sa ganitong klaseng season wala ka naman panahon para sumama pa loob mo, isang araw dapat diyan we need to bounce back, and be ready for Friday’s game.”

The win-or-go-home match between UP and DLSU is slated for Friday, at 6 PM. The winner will advance to the finals and face Ateneo who have already eliminated FEU from title contention.
