UAAP SEASON 87
Achrissa Maw tows UP to a tight victory over FEU
University of the Philippines edged out Far Eastern University in a tight ballgame, 82-77, in the UAAP Season 87 Women’s Basketball Tournament, September 22, Sunday, at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Achrissa Maw stepped up once again for the Diliman-based squad, one rebound shy away from a double-double, with 25 points on a 10/13 field goal clip, nine boards, three assists, and three steals. She was also key in the win versus University of the East last September 14, tallying 18 points, six rebounds and one steal.
The Maroons were ahead, 75-71, but FEU’s Shane Salvani converted four straight points to tie the game at 75, with 3:13 remaining.
Maw sank two free throws and a layup, and Christie Bariquit split her freebies to push UP up back by five, 80-75, with 15.9 ticks left.
Lady Tamaraw MJ Manguiat was fouled on the three-point attempt and sank two of three from the free throw stripe to close the gap to a single possession, 80-77, with 12.5 seconds to go.
On the other end, sniper Kaye Pesquera shot two free throws to seal the game in UP’s favor, 82-77.
With the win, State U has climbed to joint fourth seed alongside Ateneo de Manila University, both teams sporting identical 2-2 records.
Second year Fighting Maroon Louna Ozar finished with a double-double with 17 points, 11 rebounds, and three steals. Also recording a double-double outing is Bariquit who added 13 points, 10 rebounds, and two steals.
Salvani carried the Morayta-based squad with 28 points, six rebounds, and three assists, while Max dela Torre and Manguiat contributed 11 points each but it was all for naught as FEU suffered a close defeat.
The UP Fighting Maroons (2-2) will be put to the test in their next match against the rising Adamson University Lady Falcons (3-1) on Saturday, 11:30AM, at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Meanwhile, the FEU Lady Tamaraws (1-3) are hoping to bounce back but DLSU Lady Archers (0-4) are hungry as ever to get their first win on their first round meeting, Wednesday, 11:30AM, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Cubao, Quezon City.
